Founded in the 16th century, it is not only a religious center but also an important cultural hub. The monastery is renowned for its beautiful Tibetan architecture, intricate murals, and colorful Tibetan Buddhist art. Erlangjian Scenic Area (Qinghai Lake)
The Erlangjian Scenic Area, located near Qinghai Lake, offers some of the most magnificent views of this vast lake, which is the largest in China and one of the largest saline lakes in the world. The area provides spectacular panoramic views of the shimmering blue waters of Qinghai Lake, surrounded by grasslands and snow-capped mountains. Visitors can stroll along the scenic pathways, take photographs, and enjoy the tranquility of the natural landscape. The region is also rich in birdlife, especially during migration seasons, making it a popular spot for birdwatching.

Qinghai Lake Boat Ride
A boat ride on Qinghai Lake is one of the highlights of this journey. As the largest saltwater lake in China, Qinghai Lake is a stunning natural wonder, and experiencing it from the water gives a unique perspective. The boat ride offers beautiful views of the surrounding highland grasslands, distant mountains, and bird-filled wetlands. During the journey, you might spot migratory birds like swans, geese, and various species of ducks. The serene atmosphere and expansive views provide a peaceful escape from the busy world, making it a memorable experience for nature lovers.

Chaka Salt Lake
Chaka Salt Lake, often referred to as the “Mirror of the Sky,” is one of the most surreal and picturesque landscapes in China. Located in the Qaidam Basin, this vast salt flat is famous for its reflective surface, which creates an illusion of a mirrored sky. When the weather is calm, the lake reflects the surrounding mountains, creating a mesmerizing and almost otherworldly scene. The salt flats are often covered with a thin layer of water, which enhances the reflective effect. Visitors can walk along the lake’s edges, take photos, or simply marvel at the striking beauty of the landscape. It’s also a fantastic spot for photographers and those seeking to connect with nature in a tranquil setting.

Zhangye Danxia Geological Park
Zhangye Danxia Geological Park is one of China’s most famous and visually striking natural wonders, known for its colorful sandstone formations. These red, yellow, orange, and purple layered rock formations have been shaped by millions of years of geological activity, including erosion and sedimentation. The unique, vibrant colors and dramatic landscapes of Zhangye Danxia, often referred to as the “Rainbow Mountains,” make it one of the top tourist destinations in China. Visitors can hike along the viewing platforms and admire the surreal formations, which seem to shift and change color with the light throughout the day. The park’s most famous features are its multi-colored mountains, and it’s a place that is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who visit.

Giant Buddha Temple (Zhangye)
The Giant Buddha Temple in Zhangye is home to a colossal reclining Buddha, one of the largest in China, measuring 34.5 meters in length. The temple was built during the Han Dynasty and serves as an important symbol of Zhangye’s Buddhist heritage. The statue is housed in a large, ancient wooden structure, which is itself a remarkable feat of architecture. The Giant Buddha Temple is a serene and sacred site, where visitors can explore the temple’s peaceful atmosphere, admire the impressive Buddha statue, and learn about the religious significance of the site. The temple is also a testament to the region’s long-standing Buddhist culture and history.

Wooden Tower (Zhangye)
The Wooden Tower in Zhangye, also known as the Zhangye Wooden Pagoda, is an ancient structure that dates back to the Tang Dynasty. Unlike typical brick or stone pagodas, this pagoda is made entirely of wood, which makes it a rare and impressive architectural landmark. The tower is known for its intricate carvings and beautifully preserved wooden beams, which have withstood the test of time. It’s an important piece of Zhangye’s cultural heritage and offers visitors a chance to appreciate traditional Chinese wooden architecture. From the top of the tower, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding city and landscapes.

Mogao Caves (Dunhuang)
The Mogao Caves, also known as the Thousand Buddha Caves, are one of the most significant cultural and historical sites along the ancient Silk Road. Located near Dunhuang, these caves house over 2,000 square meters of murals, statues, and other Buddhist artwork that date back more than 1,500 years. The caves were constructed over several centuries, beginning in the 4th century, and were used by Buddhist monks as places of worship and meditation. The art inside the caves represents a blend of Indian, Persian, and Chinese influences and is considered a masterpiece of Buddhist culture. The Mogao Caves are now a UNESCO World Heritage site and are often called the “Pompeii of the East” for their remarkable preservation.

Singing Sand Mountains and Crescent Moon Spring (Dunhuang)
The Singing Sand Mountains, located near Dunhuang, are a unique natural phenomenon. The sand dunes produce a distinct “singing” sound when the wind blows over them, creating a mystical atmosphere. The nearby Crescent Moon Spring, nestled between the dunes, is an oasis that has been a vital water source for travelers along the ancient Silk Road. Shaped like a crescent moon, the spring is surrounded by lush vegetation, offering a striking contrast to the surrounding desert. Visitors can take camel rides through the dunes to experience the desert firsthand and visit the spring, which has been a source of life for centuries.

Dunhuang Museum
The Dunhuang Museum is dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Dunhuang region, particularly its role as a key stop along the ancient Silk Road. The museum features a wide range of exhibits, including sculptures, ancient manuscripts, and artifacts recovered from the Mogao Caves. Visitors can learn about the history of Dunhuang, the art of the Silk Road, and the cultural exchanges that took place between the East and West over many centuries. The museum is an excellent place to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s history and its significance in Chinese and world heritage.

Yadan National Geological Park (Dunhuang)
Yadan National Geological Park, also known as the “Ghost City,” is a captivating desert landscape characterized by extraordinary rock formations created by wind erosion. The park’s otherworldly terrain is full of towering, spire-like formations that seem to rise from the earth like ancient ruins. The eerie and dramatic landscape has earned it the nickname “Ghost City.” It’s an ideal place for adventurous travelers who enjoy exploring unique geological features and dramatic landscapes. The park also offers some fascinating hiking opportunities, where visitors can walk among the strange formations and experience the silence and beauty of the desert.

Yumen Pass and the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty (Dunhuang)
Yumen Pass, located near Dunhuang, was an important strategic point along the ancient Silk Road and is rich in historical significance. It was once a crucial military outpost used to protect the trade routes and travelers. The remains of the Han Dynasty Great Wall can still be seen here, offering a glimpse into China’s ancient defense systems. The wall was built to protect the empire from invasions and is an important piece of China’s military history. Today, the Yumen Pass and the Great Wall serve as a reminder of the historical significance of Dunhuang as a gateway to the west.

Signage improvement

Whenever I want to exit the metro into a mall, there is no signage to tell me which exit I should use. All exitspoint to above ground road name. Its just not one city, it’s every city in China the metro signage is like that. For a foreigner, I just want to get to the mall. Also there is no big map at the station indicating the exit goes to where. I hope metro stations all over China especially major cities can improve on the metro exit signage.

Experience China's Ancient Capitals: Xi'an

Xi’an, located in the central part of Shaanxi Province, China, is a city with a long history and rich culture. As one of the four ancient capitals of China, Xi’an was the capital of thirteen dynasties and has hosted countless important events and cultural exchanges in history. The city is rich in historical relics, such as the Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shihuang and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, which show the splendor of ancient civilization. Xi’an is also the starting point of the Silk Road and was once an important hub for cultural exchanges between the East and the West. In addition to historical relics, Xi’an also attracts countless tourists with its food culture and traditional folk customs. Overall, Xi’an is a city that combines ancient and modern charm, full of unique historical heritage and cultural atmosphere.
This package includes accommodation in a top four-star or five-star hotel, daily breakfast, an English-speaking local guide, all transportation services, and customized experience options. This is an ideal introduction to China for first-time travelers brought to you by Hello China Trip.

2 Days Xi'an-Chenlu Ancient Town+Yan'an Tour

Travel Itinerary

On the first morning of this tour, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Xi’an, after confirming the pickup time with you in advance. Leave the hustle and bustle of the big city behind and take a leisurely five-hour drive to Hukou Waterfall in Yichuan. On the way, you’ll make a brief stop in Chenlu Ancient Town, a town famous for its pottery making since the Ming Dynasty. Watch how local artisans (who are all residents of the town) create their crafts with the same care and attention as their forefathers.
From here, continue your drive to Yichuan, where you’ll find the spectacular Hukou Waterfall. This naturally spectacular waterfall is the largest yellow waterfall in the world and is stunning in its size, scenery, and color. Your guide will assist you in checking into a hotel near the Hukou Waterfall scenic area, and then it’s time to admire the waterfall itself. If you travel in winter, the sight of the waterfall is even more extraordinary. The frozen water tumbles down the rocks, creating an unusual natural phenomenon. The stunning scenery means there are plenty of photo opportunities. You’ll return to your hotel to relax in the evening.

Meals included: None
Note: Due to the Shaanxi History Museum being closed on Mondays, the tour schedule may be adjusted.

After breakfast, your guide will greet you. The day begins with a visit to the Chinese Revolutionary Headquarters in Yan’an, considered the birthplace of Chinese Communism and modern China. Stops at Zaoyuan and Yangjialing Revolutionary Headquarters provide insight into China’s modern history as it emerged through the Communist Revolution.
From here, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the daily life of a typical local Chinese family. In the unique architecture of ancient caves, you’ll be able to sample local cuisine and customs with your family.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: For small group tour participants, a transfer service to the airport can be arranged upon request.

This is the tomb of Emperor Jing. His son Emperor Wu of Han opened up the Silk Road in 138 BC. After the wars of the Qin Dynasty, the Han Dynasty formed its own cultural characteristics. Discover the reasons why the Han Dynasty reached its peak at that time.
This attraction is less visited by tourists, and you will see many small terracotta figurines displayed under the glass walkway.
In stark contrast to the stern faces of the Terracotta Warriors, these Terracotta Warriors have mysterious smiles on their faces. This walkway gives people an insight into how these Terracotta Warriors were built.
Afterwards, you will be transferred back to the hotel and enjoy free time in the evening.

Meals included: None

After an hour and a half drive from Xi’an, you will see the Terracotta Warriors that you have seen hundreds of times in photos, books and TV. With the help of your guide, explore the secrets of this army. How were the Terracotta Warriors made? How are they preserved? What is their original color?
Then, your guide will take you closer to these warriors and learn from you how to make miniature versions in the cave dwellings of local craftsmen families.
Learn the traditional skills from 2000 years ago, make sculptures with your own hands, interact with local people, listen to their stories, and feel the real way of life of local people.
There are only a few craftsmen left who still work in the traditional way. Visiting their workshops is a good way to support the local community and should achieve sustainable development.
In the late afternoon, stroll on the ancient city wall. From the top of the wall, you can enjoy the view of different areas of the city, including the area with old brand stores and the busy bar street.
Visit the Grand Mosque and have fun in the Muslim Quarter. Challenge yourself to a food adventure and find traditional dishes and popular special snacks.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: If the activity attraction is closed on the day, the itinerary may be adjusted.

Traditional costumes are also part of Chinese culture. Before visiting the museum, go to the workshop to change into Hanfu and put on ancient costume makeup to start today’s time travel.
The Small Wild Goose Pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty and is 43 meters high. The tower is part of the Jianfu Temple complex, known for its exquisite architecture.
The nearby Xi’an Museum showcases Xi’an’s rich history. The museum’s collection includes artifacts from various dynasties, such as pottery, calligraphy, paintings, and sculptures.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: For small group tour participants, a transfer service to the airport can be arranged upon request.

Upon your arrival at Xi’an airport , your dedicated tour guide will greet you outside the baggage claim area. Undoubtedly, the Terracotta Warriors are a highlight of Xi’an. You will take a one-hour drive to the outskirts of Xi’an, where you can admire the famous Terracotta Warriors. These incredible underground life-size soldiers, archers, horses and chariots represent the army that defeated other Chinese armies and were a decisive factor in the formation of a unified China in ancient times. Then visit Xi’an’s iconic building, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, which was built more than a thousand years ago and houses precious Buddhist materials brought back from India by Xuanzang.
To avoid the crowds at the Terracotta Warriors site, we recommend that visitors have a hearty breakfast in the morning, visit an attraction, and arrive there around 12 noon. You can continue your tour because many people are having lunch during this time, so there are fewer people.
You can then choose to have a picnic in the Qin Shi Huangdi Mausoleum Park next to the Terracotta Warriors, or drive about 30 minutes to a local restaurant on the way to the city center.

Meals included: Breakfast

This Buddhist temple dates back to 67 AD and features a 13-story brick pagoda. The pagoda collapsed in rain in August 1981, revealing a 1,000-year-old underground vault filled with 2,400 treasures from the Tang Dynasty and previous dynasties that were given as offerings.
The artifacts include gold and silver vessels, glazed objects, porcelain, pearls, gemstones, textiles, and religious objects. The biggest treasure is the Buddha’s finger bone, which was offered to the Chinese emperor during the Tang Dynasty.

Meals included: Breakfast

You will go to the ancient city wall and take a bicycle tour to listen to the echoes of history. The city of Xi’an is divided into the inner city and the outer city, surrounded by the ancient city wall. The ancient city wall was built in 194 BC and has witnessed the changes of history. The ancient city wall is huge, high and long, stretching for about 14 kilometers. In addition to walking, cycling around the city wall is also a good choice to enjoy the scenery. Then visit the Xi’an History Museum to appreciate the historical relics.
End of a pleasant trip to Xi’an, return with full of memories and wonderful experiences‌‌, you will be transferred to airport to take a flight back home or to your next destination in China.
